We have an above average prescription of benzodiazepines (Z drugs) such as Diazepam and Zopiclone. Current medical advice is that they are best taken for a maximum of 1-2 weeks.
Longer prescriptions are likely to lead to dependence. Older patients are also at greater risk of falls and hip fractures. We will write to patients on such prescriptions and offer support to help them reduce and ultimately come off these drugs.
More information is available in this leaflet.
We are also reviewing our prescription of medications such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen and Diclofenac to ensure they are being used safely.
If you have been taking any one of these drugs on a regular basis for up to three months and have not had a medication review this year, please book an appointment with your regular GP.
